WP 6: Foundation of Distributed European Electronic Resource (DEER)

Objectives

To lay the foundation for a new Distributed European Electronic Resource (DEER) for research and Higher Education), examining problems of general framework, technology and interfaces.

Description of Work

6a) University College, London (UCL) will study a general framework considering applicability on an European scale of: JISC’s Distributed National Electronic Resource (DNER) and EMII’s distributed content framework (dcf). UCL will co-ordinate with the other partners in 6b and 6c.

6b)The Historisch-Kulturwissenschaftliche Informationsverarbeitung, Universität zu Köln, in connection with a Notebook university program, is working on an infrastructure for university wide-access to digital materials such that students can use them both at university and at their home desks. They will explore how this program could become one of the technological ingredients of DEER.

6c) The Media Lab (Helsinki) will explore user requirement and interface problems for DEER.

Milestones and expected results

The first milestone will be initial ideas which are presented at the first conference (month 4). Köln and Helsinki will submit reports (month 11) which are integrated into the report from University College, London (month 11), which will then be discussed by all the members at a conference (month 12). Laying the foundations for DEER will serve to identify a cluster of future research problems, topics and projects.
